Shares of Boston Scientific have suffered this year and more pain was in store for the stock Wednesday after the company said a cybersecurity incident resulted in global disruption to its operations.
Boston Scientific stock declined 4.2% to $47.76 on Wednesday and was on pace for its lowest closing price since July 31, 2026, after the medical device maker said in a regulatory filing a cyberattack has halted business.
Boston Scientific said the cyberattack has caused, and is expected to continue to cause, "disruptions and limitations of access" across its information systems and business applications. This includes the ability to process and ship customer orders, according to the company.
"While the company is working diligently to restore affected functions and systems access, the timeline for a full restoration is not yet known," Boston Scientific said in a regulatory filing.
Boston Scientific added that the investigation into the cyberattack was ongoing and that the full scope of the incident wasn't yet known. The company, for this reason, hasn't been able to determine if the cyberattack is "reasonably likely to have a material impact" on its business.
It's been a tough stretch for Boston Scientific stock. Shares were down 48% this year and had dropped 53% over the past 12 months as of the closing bell on Tuesday.
In late July, the company's second-quarter earnings narrowly beat expectations. Guidance, however, was a disappointment with Boston Scientific cutting its full-year profit and revenue outlook.
This came after CEO Michael Mahoney in May at Bernstein's Annual Strategic Decisions Conference flagged "a declining usage of Watchman stand-alone procedures," referring to Boston Scientific's flagship heart implant.
The Watchman device is designed to prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of stroke. It's a common alternative for patients with atrial fibrillation who can't take long-term blood thinners. Mahoney noted that doctors are increasingly combining Watchman procedures with other treatments during a single visit.
Barron's on May 28 also withdrew its stock pick. Wall Street, however, is still optimistic. Of the 33 analysts polled by FactSet, Boston Scientific has an average Buy rating with a price target of $61.41.
