Alibaba has announced an additional donation of 10 million yuan to support emergency rescue, transitional resettlement, and post-disaster reconstruction efforts in the Gyirong Port disaster zone of Gyirong County, Shigatse City, Tibet. This follows the company's rapid mobilization of two batches of essential supplies to the frontline since the disaster struck yesterday.
At approximately 10:30 a.m. on August 26, a massive mudslide originating from the Nepalese side surged across the border into Chinese territory, causing significant casualties and leaving many missing at Gyirong Port. Upon learning of the situation, Alibaba immediately activated its disaster emergency response mechanism.
The first batch of urgently assembled relief materials, including 2,900 boxes of food, drinking water, and other daily necessities, arrived in Gyirong Town on the evening of August 26. A second shipment of 5,000 boxes of instant food departed from Shigatse today and is expected to reach the disaster area by 9 p.m. this evening.
Alibaba's philanthropic arm stated that the newly added 10 million yuan donation will be precisely allocated to key areas based on the actual needs on the ground, including assistance for affected residents, emergency repair of infrastructure, and prevention of secondary disasters. Moving forward, the company will fully cooperate with national efforts in disaster relief and post-disaster reconstruction, striving to help the region restore normal production and living order as quickly as possible.
According to preliminary statistics as of 8 a.m. on August 27, rescue teams have successfully located two villagers from Resuo Village, while three fatalities have been confirmed and 558 individuals remain unaccounted for, including 260 foreign nationals. In response, the Shigatse municipal government has activated a Level I emergency response for natural disaster relief, established a frontline command center, and mobilized professional forces to carry out search and rescue operations, resident安置, and material support. All relief efforts are currently proceeding in an active and orderly manner.
